Sale

Artists, heirs or other stakeholders may also decide, besides donating an artistic legacy, to sell the entire legacy to a collection-managing institution and/or to sell it on the private art market. This is possible because of the market potential of the artist’s oeuvre and archive. A new owner may also give it the care it requires. The disadvantage is that the legacy may become scattered and less readily available to researchers.

Selling some of the works of art in the artistic legacy can provide financial resources. This offers opportunities to extend the activities of a (future) estate.
